Token
A coin created on top of Solana that is not SOL itself.
Anyone can create a token on Solana for a tiny cost and give it any name and picture. Memecoins are tokens. Two tokens can have the same name, so the address is what identifies the real one.
Why it matters
Easy creation is why scams exist. Check the address and basic facts before you buy anything.
